Transfer Deadline Day

by Joao

It’s that strange time of year when the season has already started, and yet not every team is complete. Clubs look to make last minute deals in an attempt to bolster their squad for the next four months. After today, no more transfers will be made until January. This has been a relatively slow summer in regard to transfers, with only big spenders like Manchester City and Real Madrid making any big buys. But you never know what twists and turns lie ahead in the next 24 hours.

When you think about the logic of transfer deadline day, it doesn’t make much sense. Clubs have all summer, from June 1 to August 31, to make deals. Why do clubs wait until the very last minute, sometimes literally minutes before midnight on August 31 to seal a deal?

The main reason would always have to be that clubs work incredibly hard to iron out deals, so much so that things are not finalized until the last possible moments. Other than that, you could look at the suspense factor. That one doesn’t really make sense either because most teams want to have all their new players in as soon as possible so they can start working with the squad they will have for the season.

So far, the transfers that have been finalized today are not terribly shocking. Want-a-way Manchester City striker Robinho has finally got his move from Eastlands and is heading to AC Milan. Hopefully he can stop complaining about where he is long enough to actually play some nice football.

Ghana’s star from the World Cup, Asamoah Gyan, is set to join Premier League club Sunderland. If the reports so far are true, it will be Sunderland’s record signing. The deal is believed to be £13.24 million, beating out last year’s record signing of Darren Bent for £10 million.

In other news, it looks like Liverpool’s summer flirtation with West Ham striker Carleton Cole is finally over. The forward looked to be a final key signing for Roy Hodgson’s side, but West Ham have rejected their £9 million bid. The reasoning behind West Ham’s rejection doesn’t make much sense. They claim that while they’ve known the bid was coming for some time, it is now too late in the transfer window for them to sign a replacement. Despite Ryan Babel being offered in the deal, the Hammers don’t look to be selling Cole.

The last and final piece of interesting transfer gossip is Robbie Keane being loaned from Tottenham to Besiktas. While this isn’t quite headline transfer deadline day news, it’s certainly an interesting switch. Poor Robbie Keane can’t seem to get a game anywhere, as he was sold to Tottenham six months after moving to Liverpool and sitting on the bench, then being loaned out to Celtic for the second half of last season, and now seemingly on his way to Turkey.

It’s not been a fascinating transfer deadline day so far which is probably due to many clubs already making their important moves in the window. Many clubs have had to be extra tight this summer as well, so it comes as no surprise not to see a ton of movement today. Still, the day’s not over yet. Perhaps we will still get some headlines after all.
