Tottenham football club

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club is an English professional football club which now plays in the Premier League. Usually referred to as Spurs, the club's home stadium is White Hart Lane, Tottenham, in the London Borough of Haringey. Founded ominously under a North London streetlight by a group of local grammar school boys in 1882, Tottenham Hotpsur have went on to build a worldwide standing as one of European football's most romantic clubs in the 125 years since. Having moved to White Hart Lane in 1899 and not content with winning the Southern League in 1900, Tottenham Hotspur became the first and only non-league club to win the FA Cup in 1901 and once more followed up a league win with an FA Cup victory twenty years later in 1921, only a year after winning the Second separation.

Rowe's successful modern style tactics were expertly executed by Spurs legends such as Ron Burgess, Len Duquemin and a man who would go down in Spurs folklore when he himself ascended to the manager's role in 1958, Bill Nicholson. Tottenham were the first club in the 20th century to achieve the League and FA Cup Double, winning both competitions in the 1960-61 seasons. In 1963, Spurs became the first British club to win a major European trophy - the European Cup Winners' Cup. In the 1980s, Spurs won several trophies: the FA Cup twice, FA Community Shield and the UEFA Cup 1983-84. In addition, they are the current Football League Cup holders, beating Chelsea 2-1 in extra time. This victory means that Tottenham have won a trophy in each of the last six decades - an achievement only matched by Manchester United.

The late 1970s saw a decline arrested only by the ostentatious signings of Argentinian World Cup heroes Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa in 1978 and the emergence of midfield hero Glenn Hoddle and FA Cup wins in 1981 and 1982 and another UEFA Cup in 1984 saw a return to glory, glory days at White Hart Lane under Keith Burkinshaw. His departure led to a couple of "nearly" years under Peter Shreeves and David Pleat and it wasn't until 1991 that the FA Cup made it's way back to Tottenham. Financial problems and lack of success on the pitch beset the club during the 1990s but under the guidance of owners ENIC the club have finished fifth two seasons running in 2006 and 2007 and a brighter future now looks both possible and probable.
