Rangers Football Club is a Scottish football team based in Glasgow, who currently play in the Scottish Premier League. Scotland and they are one of the most successful football clubs in Europe enjoying a long and proud history. Originally founded in 1873 Rangers quickly established themselves as a competitive force in Scottish football and since their beginning they have developed into one of the two top teams in the Scottish Premier League. Rangers have won 51 league titles, a world record, and have won more major trophies than any football club in the world. The club is nicknamed The Teddy Bears, from the rhyming slang for Gers, which in turn is short for Rangers, and the fans are known to each other as "Bluenoses". The club's correct name is simply Rangers F.C.
The club's home, the all-seated 51,082-capacity Ibrox Stadium in south-west Glasgow, has been accredited as one of UEFA's five-star stadia. The stadium was the first one in Scotland to be granted this accolade, which it now shares with Hampden Park, Scotland's national stadium. In addition to their outstanding domestic success Rangers have also proven themselves as European contenders after lifting the European Cup Winner’s Cup in 1972. However, since this date Rangers have failed to lift any European silverware despite repeated attempts to impose themselves in Europe.
In current years Rangers and Celtic have attempted to tackle the inherent sectarianism of their fans that has been prevalent in years gone by as the Rangers supporters are traditionally Protestant and the Celtic supporters are traditionally Catholic. The steps Rangers have taken gained admiration from UEFA when in September 2007 they praised the measures the club had taken against sectarianism. Rangers FC are one of the two strongest teams competing in Scottish football and their success in the League is unparalleled in all of Europe. Rangers' players and fans today are multi-national and of various religions, although the club have traditionally been identified with and favored the Protestant and Unionist community of Scotland.
