Valencia 1-1 Werder Bremen Highlights

by Joao on 11 March, 2010

It was a controversial match in Valencia what saw the hosts draw 1-1 with Werder Bremen. The match started as expected, with Bremen holding a tight defense against Valencia’s pretty passing game. But it all changed when a controversial penalty was awarded to Bremen, which Torsten Frings converted. This was 25 minutes into the match, and changed the face of the game.

From that moment on, Valencia lost their cool, and the Germans kept theirs with a stoic performance. Valencia tried to make their main weapons pay off, and were close to a goal, but Bremen didn’t let go of their playing principles. Things looked even worse for Valencia, when in the second half Banega was shown a straight red card for a rough foul. Hope looked lost for the Spaniards, but Juan Mata scored the equalizer shortly after his teammate was sent off, and made things look better for Valencia in the second leg.

The cold Russian winter wasn’t enough to stop Wolfsburg from grabbing a result that’ll make them favorites to move on to the next round.
It was more of a match of wits than of football, with both teams trying to keep the other under control while looking timidly for a goal. Certainly a match not worthy [...]

A huge win for the Belgian side, which all but stamped their ticket for the next round.

An excellent, intense match, worthy of the Champions League, between two tactically sound and very personalized teams, leaving our mouths watering for the second leg clash.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 Sporting Highlights

March 10, 2010

Sporting held back Atletico’s superstars, despite being down to 10 men for most of the match – and ending the game with 9 players.
Atletico Madrid are a team I dislike, with a manager I dislike even more. And not because of any personal grudge, but because they’re the epitome of the team that plays up [...]

Burnley 1-1 Stoke Highlights

March 9, 2010

A match that fits the game that was played by both teams, with the added comical bonus that Burnley moved their advertising boards closer to the pitch to disrupt Delap’s long throws.
Which failed. Delap took one of his bullet throws and Mamady Sidibe flicked it on to Tuncay’s goal – it was Delap’s 10th assist [...]
