Based in Newcastle upon Tyne and founded in 1892 Newcastle United are highly ranked as one of the most successful clubs in English football history. Newcastle United Football Club (also known as The Magpies or The Toon) is an English football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne, who currently play in the Premier League. The club was merger of two local clubs, Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End. Since their founding year, the club has played at their home ground of St. James' Park. They have won the First Division Championship four times and the FA Cup six times, though their league success was achieved before the Second World War. In European competition the most notable honour the club has won is the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, in 1969
However, what goes up must go down and the 1980's signaled a dramatic decline as the club languished in the Second Division. A series of managers were unable to improve the clubs fortunes and it wasn't until Arthur Cox arrived with ex- England captain Kevin Keegan that the club was steered back to the First Division. Kevin Keegan returned to the club as manager in 1992 and led the team who were struggling in Division two to a dramatic upwards turn in form. This amazing progress resulted in Newcastle gaining promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 1992-1993 seasons. With Keegan at the helm Newcastle’s form held and they impressed with sublime attacking play during their first season back in the top flight
During the 2006-2007 seasons Newcastle failed to find form and their poor performances led to Glenn Roeder's resignation. Sam Allardyce was appointed as manager in May 2007 and hopes are high that he is the man to bring success back to Newcastle. Newcastle is widely renowned for their large and loyal fan base and their bitter rivalry with neighbors’ Sunderland. The club's traditional kit colours are black and white striped shirts, with black shorts and socks. Supporters of Newcastle United refer to themselves as the Toon Army.
