 Fulham football club

Founded in 1879 and based in London Fulham FC are one of the oldest professional football clubs in English Football. They celebrated their 125th anniversary in 2004, and they are in the top tier of English football, the FA Premier League. Thus far throughout their history they have failed to secure any major honours but in 2002 enjoyed a brief participation in Europe by way of the UEFA Cup. Fulham are the oldest professional football team in London, usually considered to have been founded in 1879.

In the 1960’s Fulham gained the reputation of performing numerous “great escapes” as despite coming close to relegation they managed to pull themselves back from the brink on a number of occasions. However Fulham were relegated to the third division at the end of the 1968-69 seasons it was apparent that the club had hit rock bottom. In 1975, as a Second Division team, they contested the FA Cup final for the only time in their history, losing 2-0 to West Ham United. Fulham qualified for the UEFA Cup in 2002 by winning the Intertoto Cup, beating Bologna 5-3 in the final over two legs. In the UEFA Cup, they won through two rounds before being defeated by Hertha Berlin. In the mid-1990s they had a brief spell in the former Fourth Division, but they recovered spectacularly by the early 2000s.

The 2006-07 was an unsuccessful one for Fulham with the team failing to find form and coming dangerously close to relegation. This threat led to Chris Coleman being sacked and Northern Ireland manager Lawrie Sanchez stepping in to take over. Fulham managed to avoid relegation to the Coca Cola Championship by beating Portsmouth FC 1-0 on the last game of the 2007-08 seasons thanks to a Danny Murphy header.
