Everton Football Club is an English football club situated in the city of Liverpool. The club vies in the Premier League and has contested more seasons in the top flight of English football than any other. Everton have enjoyed a successful history in terms of honours, having won the League Championship nine times, the FA Cup five times and the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup once. The club's most recent major trophy was the 1995 FA Cup.

Everton were founded in 1878 as St Domingo FC so that people form the parish of St Domingo could play a sport outside the summer months. The club were renamed Everton FC a year later and were one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888. Everton quickly achieved achievement winning the League in the 1891 season, the FA Cup in 1906 and the League title again at the end of the 1914-1915 season. Everton Football Club is one of two major English football teams to compete in the Premier League along with bitter rivals Liverpool.

 

The 1960’s saw Everton lift two more League Championship titles and one FA Cup hailing a period of success not enjoyed since the 1930’s. The 1970’s saw the club slide into decline as rivals Liverpool began to flourish. However the 1980’s would prove to be the most victorious era ever enjoyed by the club. Everton were League Champions in both 1984-1985 and 1986-1987 and won the European Cup Winner’s Cup in 1985. It remains to this day Everton’s only major European trophy. Numerous well-known footballers have had a career at Everton F.C. Since 2000, the club has yearly recognized victorious former players as "Giants" of the team. Dixie Dean, who played for the team in the 1920s and 30s, is the most prolific goal-scorer in English football history.
