In spite of the success of previous years in all competitions they’ve been into, FC Barcelona is another victim of the financial crisis and will have to curb their spending in the near future.
After getting a loan for 150 million Euros, Barcelona will have to tighten the belt. Xavier Faus, the club’s new vice-president, told the press that Barcelona need to be making a profit of at least 50 million Euros a year. He blames the somewhat dire financial times on the people that were managing the economical side of the club and gives the Ibrahimovic business as an example of poor financial dealing, qualifying it as “unsustainable”. He also says that Barcelona currently owe more money than they did in 2003.
Barcelona has proven that they can pull amazing players from their youth academy, and curbing spending is something that every club is doing. Singling out Ibrahimovic as the worst deal the club made recently is probably a bit harsh, especially since the forward only had one season to make an impression. If we consider how much money is wasted just a few hundred miles away in Madrid, Barcelona’s management looks pretty solid.
