Leeds United v Liverpool

A goal from Liverpool’s French striker David Ngog won Liverpool the Carling Cup tie.

Leeds started lively utilising Robert Snodgrass down the right wing, causing Liverpool defender Andrea Dossena all kinds of problems.

Lubomir Michalik headed a corner towards goal and Jermaine Beckford managed to flick the ball over the goal line, with Luciano Beccio trying to apply the touch, the officials ruled the effort offside.

For Liverpool, Fabio Aurelio’s free-kick found Albert Riera unmarked just yards out, but his headed effort allowed Leeds stopper Shane Higgs to make the save.

Jermaine Beckford had an opportunity push the home side ahead but, after latching onto a long goal kick from his keeper, he found himself between the Liverpool defenders but the shot was too weak to cause any problems. He was close again minutes later after a cross came from the left wing when his header went inches over the cross-bar.

David Ngog then opened the scoring after picking up Javier Mascherano’s miss-hit shot from outside the box, neatly turning, and then slotting the ball into the far corner of the goal from close range.

The goal scorer was replaced by Steven Gerrard who had an opportunity to extend the score, but after shooting wide, the game wound down and Liverpool will be satisfied with the result.
