First Half Highlights

Russia complete the list of EURO 2008 surprises as they defeated Netherlands in a match that ended a few minutes ago. It was a superb match with no less than 55 shots on goal, 28 for Netherlands and 27 for Russia. This means that the two sides shot towards the goal once every 2 minutes.

Guus Hiddink’s side was the more active side of the game. It was an unusual situation for Holland as Russia where their first opponents that attacked the Dutch side and Van Basten’s boys had to defend.

Russia opened the score in the 56th minute as Pavlyuchenko sent the ball into the net after a great Arshavin cross. Netherlands started to race for the equalizer but they found it difficult to threaten Russia’s goal.
The equalizer came though late in the 86th minute as Van Nistelrooy headed the ball into the net after a nice Sneijder cross. The quarter-final went into extra-time. Russia won the game with two goals scored in the second half of extra-time. Torbinski and Arshavin where the goal scorers.

Russia obtain a deserved win and will wait to find out their opponents in the semi-final after the last quarter-final, Spain vs Italy.
