England train Switzerland for the EURO

England – Switzerland is one of the most interesting friendly games that are scheduled to be played tomorrow, Wednesday the 6th of February. I invite you to read this preview, use the live streams if you want to watch the game live online and also to watch the highlights that I will embed during or after the game, as soon as I have them available.
England will welcome Switzerland, one of the co-host nations of the Euro 2008, at the New Wembley. The match is scheduled to kick-off at 21:00 CET. This will be the first game for the English national team after the disastrous defeat against Croatia, at the same stadium, in late November. That 3-2 loss meant that Steven Gerard and his team-mates would stay at home this summer.
Switzerland have the opportunity to play an important test game against a strong national team, now when we are about 4 months away from the start of the EURO 2008. The Swiss show some nice football and I think that they will be an interesting opponent for the English side. England played also against Austria a few months ago, also a friendly game, and we all know that Austria has not reached yet the standards requested by such an important tournament.
Fabio Capello, the new English manager, will start his job officially tomorrow when he will be registering his first match on England’s bench. The Italian coach, already started his reign with a controversial decision, by not calling David Beckham to the national team for this encounter. This way Becks, saw it’s dream of reaching 100 caps for his national team denied, by his ex-Real Madrid coach. Capello explained that the number 23 has not played an official game since November, with the Major Soccer League being in the off-season stage. Becks did train with Arsenal the whole winter period but he was still not a part of Capello’s plans.
Let’s analyse a bit the head to head history between the two sides. England vs Switzerland was last played in June 2004 at the EURO 2004. That game ended with England’s categorical 3 – 0 win. Both sides also meet at the EURO 1996 where they played their encounter to a 1 – 1 draw.
So, I would say that England are considered the favorites for tomorrow’s clash, but I won’t risk a betting tip now. It’s Capello’s first game, Switzerland are playing pretty good. On the other side, I think that I will risk it, and tip for a halftime draw. :P Good luck to everyone that bets on this event!
